It just sunk in that I'm probably working from 2pm to 10:30pm on the 4th.

Sad face.

Edit: Wait! Wait! Maybe only till 8:30! Maybe!

Since I really do think out loud (in typed format) when I'm planning things, I will be yammering on about trying to make this wedding-shebang happen. But YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ IT. No, you can skip it. Because, as per the suggestion of Dylan, I will be making a friends group for those posts. If you find yourself morbidly fascinated by my efforts to do this thing, let me know and I will add you to the group (The Society of People Not Completely Repelled by Leslie Planning a Wedding. Isn't that a club you want to join?!?! No??? Are you sure???)

Other than my planning fetish, one other reason I'm so driven to ponder this event at length is that I hate weddings. Even when people I adore get married, I kind of feel vile throughout the whole thing. Well, maybe not the WHOLE thing, but most of it. The Wedding Industrial Complex is like some kind of hateful cult that exists to turn the brains of otherwise reasonable women into pudding. It's revolting. I have never been to a wedding that seemed even close to something I would voluntarily create.

But on the other hand, Emory and I have been in love for a pretty damn long while, and I feel like we've earned a little celebration for the strength and depth of our unwavering commitment to and affection for each other. Also, cake.

So now I have to make that work. Want to watch? Probably not.

My parents' house is a cell phone signal black hole. If I stand in the yard, though, I can make a call. Inside, not so much. It's ass.

A noticed a little box wrapped in paper sitting on the kitchen counter while I was having a sandwich a minute ago. Gee, what's in it? Oh, that's grandad's ashes. Well then.

Driving up to Smalltownsville (Well, you wouldn't have heard of it) tomorrow bright and early. Won't be back in KC till Sunday night or Monday.

While I'm absolutely not opposed to this sort of study, I do wonder if it's eventually going to return us to the mode of thinking that gayness is just a disorder. Like any other disorder. Perhaps it'll be looked at as a sort of benign, tolerated disorder, but still... It's interesting and I never know quite what to think when another one of these reports pops up.

Do you speak... some language?
Public

It seems lately like everyone talking about my Beastlies on the intermanet is speaking languages I don't. I see the word "Flickr" a lot, and some words that sound like they might be nice, but who knows (I'm going to go out on a limb and say that "simplesmente fantásticos" is a positive review). Do you speak any of these languages? I can get by in French (if I'm talking to no one over the age of 8), but all of these are beyond me. If you speak a language I don't, help a lady out? )

Monday was "Run Wedding Errands" day for Emory and I. We gots some stuff done. We also went to the butterfly pavilion. We were already in the neighborhood on Official Business, so we decided to check it out. Yay butterflies! It sure beat the butterfly place we went to in Edinburgh: It was called "Butterfly World," and it took us forever on a bus to get there. When we finally found it, it turned out to be more like "Butterfly Garage." It was a bummer. Next time we have a chance, I want to take Emory to the hummingbird room in the San Diego Zoo. I think he'd love that. Also, he's never been to Sea World. Maybe we can head down to SDCC a day early or something this year. Oh! Have I mentioned we're going to have a table there this year? Woo hoo!

Anyway, in the course of out wedding errands, Emory and I discovered something that we do NOT have in common: taste in colors. There's going to be a throw-down in Paper Source on of these days. DIVORCED FOREVER.

We do indeed have a great big convoy.

We just watched the movie "Convoy," and, holy shit, is that movie weird. It's based on the song. The MOVIE is based on the SONG. I was looking for a clip to demonstrate the insanity, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Instead, I found this. If it was edited better, it would be genius. The first 30 seconds is probably the best part.

Filed under: What is wrong with me?
Public

This happens more often than I would like:

At night, I sometimes have a hard time falling asleep. Particularly if I have projects I'm working on. I can't stop thinking about them. My mind races and I think of beastlies I should make, designs I should try, details to iron out in other aspects of art projects, and whatnot. I can't fall asleep until I get out of bed and work on something till 3ish.

But then, during the day... nothing. I'll be uninspired, restless, tired (even though I slept in and recouped my missing hours), and not feel like doing much. I can't think of anything to sculpt or work on.

This needs to quit happening.

How are you supposed to budget something when you have no idea what the components should or could cost? Planning a budget for this wedding is like asking me to budget a mission to Mars. I haven't a damn clue how much any of this crap runs. Therefore, I don't have a clue what's a reasonable price and what's a giant rip-off. The concrete objects (as opposed to services), I can get sort of a grip on, because I don't necessarily have to do an official wedding-type version of it if I don't want to. I can see that a wedding dress costs a lot more than I'm willing to spend and I can get something else (something I'd rather wear, incidentally). But things like food or invitations? If it's something that someone else has to do for me (and they do; I'm going pretty DIY on a lot of stuff, but I don't have time to do EVERYTHING), then I don't know what that kind of thing runs. I got an estimate for invitations, and I'm like, geez, really? That's "toned down and simple" in your world?

It sucks because small, artist/crafty type operations are the folks I want to support, but they're not necessarily cheaper than the alternative. Boo. Also, wedding shit is the worst stuff on the planet.

I tossed my jeans in the wash with our comforter yesterday, forgetting that the comforter would probably have to be dried repeatedly to get it actually dry. So now my jeans are wee. I just bought them last week! They were nice and loose! Now they're uncomfortable. :(

The only thing that can cheer me up are the boots I bought to wear at my wedding:

I know no one cares. But I do love them so.

TOP HAT FISH BUILDING.
Public

If someone can find me a picture of the building in the "Speed Racer" city that is just a GIANT FISH IN A TOP HAT, then they win a prize. I only noticed it on second viewing, but now I love it so much. I've found an image of the skyline, but the fish building isn't there. They only show it for a second, but TOP HAT FISH BUILDING. Why isn't there a movie about that building?

Okay, I guess it's time to spill, internet-wise.

In a few days is my ten year anniversary with Emory. Ten years. So we were talking about it a couple weeks ago, and decided that maybe this is a good time to go ahead and get married. It's not a huge deal, it just seemed like it might be a nice thing to do.

So, that'll be happening. Next spring, I guess. Depends on when the Natural History Museum has availability, since that's the venue.

Emory and I had an errand to run at the Natural History Museum yesterday... When we got there, we realized we had arrived just as BUG FAIR was in full swing! BUG FAIR!!! It was like a convention of bug-related-vendors. You could buy live bugs as pets or just specimens on pins. I saw sooo many little kids playing with giant millipedes or or petting tarantulas. Of course, i didn't know this was going to be happening, so I didn't have a camera. You could buy silkworms for a dollar! I didn't end up getting anything live, but I did get these... )

As maybe I've mentioned, Emory and I have Mondays off together every two weeks. These Mondays are the fuckin' best. This past Monday we slept late and then had lunch at this weird, tiny little restaurant. It looks like it used to be a house, and it's in the middle of some residential block where you'd never find it unless your friend Lori took you there for brunch over the weekend. Thanks Lori! Anyway, our lunch was faaaaantastic. They've got this bacon there you wouldn't believe. It's INSANE this bacon. And spicy homemade ginger ale. Geez. It was so good. Then we went to the Huntington Gardens. I love the Huntington, and have been meaning to go back for ages, but we went this time because I had photos that needed particular settings. On our way there it started raining but then stopped pretty much as we were parking at the gardens. Which made the lighting absolutely perfect, plus everything looked so fresh and wet. I couldn't plan weather that perfect for shooting. Emory's a lot of fun as photography-helper. He found some of the best spots and settings. It was so nice wandering the gardens with him. And the end results are a couple photos that I think I can use for my upcoming project. I'm over-project-ed right now. They're all projects I'm psyched about, but I need to see if I can figure out a way to spread out some of the deadlines a little. Everything's happening in the fall! Except Comic Con. That's the first one. If I make at least four beastlies every day between now and then, I should have the amount I want to take.

The bulb in one of the lights I use for my little mini photo studio burned out. In the process of trying to remove the bulb from the other one so I could test it and see if the bulb or the light was the problem, I broke off an important piece of bulb #2. So now both bulbs are done. And none of the photography shops I've visited, nor even the store that sells nothing but light bulbs, have this particular kind of Tungsten bulb. I had to order it online from the people that manufacture my lighting units. And apparently also the bulbs that go in them. How convenient. Hopefully it'll get here soon. But in the meantime, I have no means to take decent photos of my beastlies. Really. Everyone who hears me express my frustration about this responds to this with a "But what if you...." No. Trust me. It doesn't look good. So no new Etsy listings till whenever I get my bulbs in the mail. I considered just going out and buying two whole new lights to save time, but decided to try being patient instead.

It's hard.
